THE POWER OF COLLABORATION: WOMEN IN DATA® + PREGNANT THEN SCREWED
JOELI BREARLEY, ACTIVIST, AUTHOR AND FOUNDER OF PREGNANT THEN SCREWED
TAISIYA MERKULOVA, CHIEF DATA OFFICER AT WOMEN IN DATA®
"Childcare costs leave rising number of parents in debt."
Women in Data® has partnered with Pregnant Then Screwed (PTS) to ensure that headlines like the this are incontrovertible and are generated from robust data led insights. As data professionals we know that in order to effect change, it is critical to combine our emotional response with hard facts and great storytelling.
Now in its second year, the PTS and Women in Data® State of the Nation research has been designed to understand the systematic shortcomings of current legislation and quantify the impact on families, businesses and society as a whole.
Collectively we want to close the gender gap and remove the challenges Women face to achieve equality of opportunities in the workplace and reduce burden of the unspoken ‘tax’ on mothers from additional unpaid labour as carers and in the home.
It’s time to do something about it… So join the conversation between Joeli Brearley (PTS) and Taisiya Merkulova (Women in Data®) on what triggered this annual research, what we have learnt along the way ,what impact truly robust data has made and most importantly, what the next steps are - not just for PTS but for all of us.

WHAT WOMEN (REALLY) WANT
EDWINA DUNN OBE, FOUNDER AT THE FEMALE LEAD
ROWENA HUMBY, CEO AT STARCOUNT & TRUSTEE AT THE FEMALE LEAD
Women are not all the same and don’t want or need the same things from life and work. But most of the policies and processes that exist today are built for a male construct and apply a simple and easy to manage ‘one size fits all’ model.
The reality is very different. Women need different things at different ages and life stages. This is the constantly changing prioritisation that women manage from puberty to fertility to menopause. If we want to release the power of women as an economic force - and not just focus on the lack of equality visible and evident across society today - it’s going to need more evidence of impact.
The Female Lead will reveal a new and transformational approach that unlocks this new game changing opportunity and value. Just as Tesco doubled its market share and shareholder value through Clubcard, looking at women through a new lens with new data opens up a whole new dynamic and a big big prize.
Less than 1 in 5 women feel they have enough information on menstrual wellbeing and yet just 1% of all healthcare research and innovation is invested in female specific health conditions. Women in Data® are looking to redress the balance. This session will share what hundreds of individuals and clinicians across the country have told us they want solved, reveal the insights from our recent pilot, gain your input into the roadmap for change, and most importantly share how the WiD community can help us shift the dial for the next generation of women.

UNVEILING THE TRUTH: THE HIDDEN REALITY OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
ROBIN SUTARA, WOMEN’S SAFETY CO-CHAIR AT WOMEN IN DATA®
AIMEE REED, DIRECTOR OF DATA AT METROPOLITAN POLICE SERVICE
MELANIE HESLOP, WOMEN’S SAFETY CO-CHAIR AT WOMEN IN DATA®
Harassment, violence, crime - the sad reality for countless women.
Violence against women and girls is an endemic issue, with countless women able to illuminate dire statistics with personal stories. However, most incidents go unreported, creating a disturbing gap between reported and unreported gender-based violence.
Throughout September and October 2023 Women in Data® fielded a nationwide survey called ‘The Hidden Reality’ with over 3,000 women. We have leveraged the knowledge, passion and skill from within our data and AI community to drive an extensive research project analysing and combining, in several data hackathons, the survey results with sets of open-source data, past surveys, policing and crime data.
We will be sharing the very first look at the findings and new insights in a comprehensive measure of the current situation with our thoughts and recommendations for change. Women in Data® commit to taking findings from the survey and hackathons forward as appropriate to inform and drive change for women in the UK and will share our plans and to do so and how our community can drive this very important agenda forward.
